HAMDEN, Conn., Aug. 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Building on a relationship that dates back more than two decades, Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists (COS), has announced a new scholarship fund [VIDEO] and support agreement with Quinnipiac University. COS has been a long-time supporter of Quinnipiac University School of Health Science and now has expanded its relationship to include the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine.
"Connecticut Orthopaedic Specialists is proud to be a supporter of the Quinnipiac University Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine," stated Glenn Elia, Chief Executive Officer at COS. "We give our financial support, professional time, and clinical expertise to their students and are excited to see them mature, give back to the community, and become a part of the health care delivery system in Connecticut."
According to Mr. Elia, under the terms of the new agreement, COS will provide $250,000 over five years to support scholarships at the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine. A portion of the donated funds will also be used to attract students into the program. COS will also provide orthopaedic surgeons and other providers to instruct students in labs, teach seminars and mentor students who are doing honors research. Students will also be able to access COS facilities for learning opportunities as well.
"The most important thing that COS offers to the medical school is the opportunity for our students to interact with their surgeons," stated Dr. Bruce Koeppen, Founding Dean of the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine. "COS has been a great supporter of the programs at Quinnipiac University, particularly Health Science, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Nursing. We are looking forward to being part of that as a medical school."
Another aspect of the long-term commitment of COS to Quinnipiac University is its support of athletic programs. Currently, Dr. David Cohen, an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at COS, serves as orthopaedic team doctor for the Quinnipiac University men's and women's hockey, basketball, and lacrosse teams. Dr. Cohen attends games, provides clinics and treats injured players at COS facilities.
