Conselium Compliance Search Reports Global Growth In 2014
--Rising demand for legal and corporate-compliance execs fueled higher salaries around the world, particularly in the pharmaceutical and medical device sector, firm reports.
DALLAS, Jan. 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The international division of Conselium, a leading search firm known for its focus on compliance and legal counsel hires, experienced double-digit growth in 2014, the company announced.
"To compete in international markets, you have to comply with the regulatory requirements in those markets," said Maurice Gilbert, Managing Director of Conselium. "This is a complex task that requires companies to have boots on the ground overseas. It's a key reason our international division saw such strong growth last year."
Highlights for the division included a 22 percent increase in completed searches for executive talent in 2014, Gilbert noted, as well as its expansion into new territories such as Panama, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Kazakhstan and Ukraine. The highly regulated pharmaceutical and medical device sector, in particular, sought more legal and compliance candidates to work in these markets in 2014, Gilbert said.
Moreover, rising demand for these professionals had a predictable effect on salaries. "On average, we saw double-digit growth in total compensation last year," Gilbert said.
Last year, Conselium's overseas placements included the gamut of legal- and compliance-related positions, including titles such as Chief Compliance Officer, Regional Compliance Officer, Compliance Director, Regional Trade Compliance Officer, Legal Counsel, and General Counsel.
For Conselium's international division, finding native candidates is a labor-intensive, high-bandwidth process. Typically, Gilbert noted, Conselium's international division interviews hundreds of qualified professionals to select five that are best suitable to present to the client.
"Our clients always want us to find local professionals who understand their home countries' business and government cultures," he said. "The challenge in international search is to simultaneously find professionals who are fluent in English, have experience in working with Western-based companies and also thoroughly understand Western-based compliance issues as well."
While the global economy's performance was mixed last year, this did not necessarily have a negative effect on demand for professionals with legal and compliance expertise, Gilbert added.
"In sluggish economic times, cash-strapped regulatory agencies often rely on aggressive enforcement of regulated industries to bolster government revenues," he explained. "This is well understood by the pharmaceutical and medical device sector. These companies continue to be laser-focused on making sure their third-party distributors and marketers overseas fully understand the strategic importance of risk-management and compliance."
