Constitutional and Civil Rights Dispute Regarding the Issuance of Marriage Licenses in Kent County
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Avanti Law Group, Sommers Schwartz, Kent County and Kent County Clerk, Mary Hollinrake are pleased to announce that they have satisfactorily resolved what Plaintiffs have framed as a constitutional and civil rights dispute regarding the issuance of marriage licenses to Kent County residents.
The Kent County Clerk has modified the marriage application process to add an option on the affidavit that is used for individuals who do not have a social security number, whereby those individuals may certify that they do not have a social security number and are not eligible to obtain one and proceed to obtain a marriage license provided that they meet the other qualifications that all applicants have to meet. In turn, Avanti and Sommers Schwartz and the Plaintiffs will dismiss the lawsuit they filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan, Case No. 1:10-cv-00305, captioned Juan Doe et al., v. Mary Hollinrake, et al. This change to the marriage application process will have immediate effect.
