The vast majority of consumer foodservice outlets in Germany are run by independent operators, which continued to struggle with the rising costs for lease agreements in 2014. Particularly in lucrative city centre locations such as Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, rents displayed a strong tendency to rise over the entire review period and during 2014. This made it increasingly difficult for independent players, who mostly lack sufficient financial backing to operate in premium locations, and resulted in a further decline in the number of independent outlets in 2014.
