Seasonal factors failed to prevent continued growth in the UK jobs market in August, according to the latest Reed Job Index.

The largest monthly measure of conditions and trends in the jobs market in the UK reveals job opportunities in August grew by 1% month on month and an impressive 14% year on year. This is the second consecutive month of growth across both measures at a time when the employment market is typically flat.

Over half of the nation's employment sectors (52%) are now posting significantly more jobs than last month with the construction and property and transport and logistics sectors faring particularly well, enjoying 20% and 16 % growth respectively. On an annual basis, the figures are stronger still with 73% of sectors growing compared with this time last year.
Overall, the Reed Job Index now stands at 139 compared with 138 in July and 122 this time last year.
Around the UK, Scotland and Wales are faring particularly well, registering impressive month on month growth of 9% and 5% respectively. Overall, every UK region is enjoying annual jobs growth, with 50% witnessing more opportunities compared with July. As for jobs in London, monthly growth dropped off slightly by 1% though on an annual basis opportunities are up by a healthy 12%.
The index confirms national salary growth still remains flat, registering 0% monthly growth with slight annual growth of 1%. Overall, the Reed Salary Index now stands at 98 as it did last month.

Our data has been pointing towards an improving jobs market for many months now. These latest figures add further weight to the argument that jobs growth has actually been embedded for some time"

This important area of the UK economy has been particularly hard hit by the recession so the figures are to be especially welcomed as are developments that will continue to support this upward trend, such as the recently approved Ebbsfleet Valley construction project in Kent.

The pre-Christmas period is typically one of the most fruitful of the year for job hunters as businesses prepare for the new year and we are hopeful that the trend of recent jobs growth can in turn spur an upturn in the wider UK economy."
The Reed Job Index is compiled by the UK's number one job site reed.co.uk, through analysis of job advertisement trends from over 10,000 recruiters throughout the UK tracked against a baseline of 100 established in December 2009.
