Convey is among a select few granted access to the Death Master File
MINNEAPOLIS, May 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Congress recently limited who can view the Social Security Administration's database that records tax identification numbers (TINs) of deceased individuals, known as the Death Master File (DMF). Convey Compliance Systems Inc. is one of the few organizations who now have access to the full DMF.

To further protect information of the deceased and lower the rate of fraud due to identity theft, the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013 includes a provision that limits DMF access as of March 2014. Before the policy update, there were few barriers for those seeking to view the data contained in the DMF. With the new provisions, those now attempting to gain access to any death records less than three years old will be required to complete a lengthy registration process and pay a sizeable fee. According to Raymond Grove, product marketing manager for Convey, "Many businesses will be affected, as validating TINs against this database is a critical component to their identity fraud programming."
"Convey, upon this change, immediately petitioned for access, as this is an important part of best practices for tax information reporting," Grove said. "Moreover, [it's] an important component of how many of our clients run their business in order to ensure they are not allowing individuals to commit fraud. By maintaining access, companies have yet another benefit of working with Convey, knowing that extra steps are being taken to ensure the information they have about their payees is as accurate as possible."
