"Rarely do we see a person with just addiction," says Ms. Barbara Hernandez, LMHC, Program Director of Co-occurring Services at Cornerstone. It is estimated that almost 9 million adults have a dual diagnosis of both a mental health disorder and a drug or alcohol addiction. Cornerstone has always treated a range of co-occurring mental health issues and addiction, but are now expanding its services to include more severe mental health conditions, such as major depressive disorder, attention deficit disorder (ADD), bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Cornerstone has added a new wing dedicated specifically to the mental health program in its treatment facility located in Ft. Lauderdale.
As one of only a handful of South Florida addiction treatment centers that offers dual diagnosis services, Cornerstone understands that addiction and mental health disorders often go hand-in-hand. Sometimes, the substance abuse results from the need to self-medicate a pre-existing mental health disorder. Dual diagnosis treatment at Cornerstone includes both one-on-one counseling and peer and therapist-led groups. The program utilizes several different techniques to help clients learn to deal with their emotions and change their behavior. Some of the techniques include:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
- Narrative therapy
- Person-centered therapy
- Validation and relaxation techniques
The program director, Ms. Hernandez, has been a licensed mental health counselor for 15 years and has been practicing psychology for over 20 years. She and her staff of therapists, addiction professionals, and certified behavioral health technicians encourage clients to recover at their own pace. "I am very much looking forward to growing the program, and to helping more clients with a dual diagnosis become productive, healthy, and happy citizens in our community," says Ms. Hernandez.
