ST. LOUIS, June 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Cover Missouri Coalition applauded today's United States Supreme Court's 6-3 ruling in King v. Burwell that upholds subsidies for health insurance purchased through federally-run health insurance marketplaces, like the Missouri Marketplace. At question in the case was whether or not consumers could receive financial help to pay their marketplace insurance premiums.
"The Supreme Court's decision means that families and individuals across Missouri will still be able to afford health insurance," said Ryan Barker, MFH vice president of health policy. "Now, nearly 200,000 Missourians who rely on tax subsidies to help pay their health insurance premium will be able to continue their coverage. These Missourians will not have to choose between health insurance and other basic needs. They will have access to vital health services at affordable costs."
Additionally, Missourians who have not yet sought out coverage in the Marketplace will be able to do so without fear that financial help might not be available in the future. In the last enrollment period, 90 percent of Missouri Marketplace enrollees qualified for premium tax credits to lower their costs, which lowered the average premium payment from $363 to $85 per month.
Missourians interested in learning more about their Marketplace health plan options, including opportunities for financial assistance, can find free information and locate in-person help by visiting the Cover Missouri website at www.covermissouri.org.
