LONDON, Sept. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Though Guangdong has a relatively small cultivated area (2,847,700 ha in 2013, only 2.34% of the national total, ranking 20 of 34 provinces), it consumes quite a large amount of pesticides annually, mainly because the high temperature and high levels of moisture tend to precipitate the occurrence of pests and diseases. In recent years (2010-2014), Guangdong has ranked in the top 10 of the 34 provinces in the country in terms of pesticide usage.
Major crops planted in Zhanjiang City (mainly in Lianjiang City, Leizhou City, Suixi County and Xuwen County) include rice, vegetables, sugarcane, peanuts, root vegetables (mainly sweet potatoes), corn and soybean. In 2013, the total crop planting area reached 649,751.46 ha, 90.70% of which was for rice (32.90%), vegetables (21.20%), Sugarcane and chewing cane (21.00%), peanuts (8.30%) and sweet potatoes (7.30%).
Crops planted in Qingyuan mainly include rice, vegetables, peanuts, corn, root vegetables and soybeans. In 2013, the total crop planting area reached 366,197.92 ha, 83% of which was for rice (36.50%), vegetables (30.30%) and peanuts (10.10%).
Crops planted in Maoming mainly include rice, vegetables, peanuts, sweet potatoes and corn. In 2013, the total crop planting area reached 414,634.54 ha, 93.40% of which was for rice (48.20%), vegetables (24.30%), peanuts (10.80%), sweet potatoes (6.30%) and corn (3.90%).
Crops grown in Shaoguan mainly include grains, vegetables, peanuts, root vegetables, soybeans and sugarcane. In 2012, the crop planting area in Shaoguan was 324,259.23 ha, 86% of which was for rice (39%), vegetables (25%), peanuts (12%), root vegetables (4%), grains except for rice (4%) and soybeans (3%).
Crops grown in Shantou mainly include rice, vegetables, root vegetables and peanuts. In 2013, the total crop planting area in Shantou was 121,725.13 ha, 97% of which was for rice (40%), vegetables (40%), root vegetables (16%) and peanuts (1%).
Crops planted in Foshan mainly include vegetables, root vegetables, grains and peanuts.In 2013, the total crop planting area reached 111,706 ha, 77% of which was for vegetables (56%), rice (10%), root vegetables (5%), other grains (4%) and peanuts (2%).
Crops planted in Chaozhou mainly include rice, vegetables, root vegetables and other dry land crops. In 2013, the total crop planting area reached 64,015.70 ha, 90.90% of which was for rice (51.30%), vegetables (22.40%), root vegetables (11.50%) and other dry land grains (5.70%).
Crops planted in Meizhou mainly include rice, vegetables, root vegetables, peanuts and other dry land crops. In 2013, the total crop planting area in Meizhou was 345,083.44 ha, 85.10% of which was for rice (50%), vegetables (21.20%), root vegetables (5.30%), dry land crops (4.30%) and peanuts (4.30%).
Crops planted in Jiangmen mainly include rice, vegetables, peanuts and root vegetables. In 2013, the total crop planting area in Jiangmen reached 284,251.21 ha, 90% of which was for rice (60.50%), vegetables (20.80%), peanuts (4.30%) and root vegetables (4.30%).
Crops planted in Yangjiang mainly include rice, vegetables, peanuts and sweet potatoes. In 2013, the total crop planting area in Yangjiang reached 242,750.32 ha, 86.70% of which was for rice (43.60%), vegetables (24.90%), peanuts (10.30%) and root vegetables (7.80%).

Crops planted in Yunfu mainly include rice, vegetables, peanut, cassava, root vegetables (mainly potatoes and sweet potatoes), corn and soybean. In 2011, the total crop planting area in Yunfu reached 187,266.96 ha, 84.90% of which was for rice (48.60%), vegetables (12.20%), peanuts (9.30%), cassava (8.20%), and root vegetables (6.60%).
Crops planted in Shanwei mainly include rice, vegetables, root vegetables and peanuts. In 2013, the total crop planting area reached 164,060.95 ha, 93.10% of which was for rice (42.50%), vegetables (30.40%), root vegetables (12.90%) and peanuts (7.40%).
Crops planted in Jieyang mainly include rice, vegetables, peanuts and sweet potatoes. In 2013, the total crop planting area in Jieyang reached 216,945.11 ha, 91.80% of which was for rice (36.10%), vegetables (29.70%), peanuts (10.80%) and sweet potatoes (22.60%).
In 2014, the total planting area of the major crops stood at 269,432 ha in Guangzhou. In particular, the planting area of vegetables, rice, flowers, sugarcane and peanuts accounted for 54%, 22%, 6%, 3% and 3% of the total respectively, and that of other grain crops such as corn and potatoes amounted to 10% of the total.
Crops grown in Zhuhai mainly include vegetables, root vegetables, sugarcane, peanuts, rice and other grains. In 2013, the total crop planting area in Zhuhai reached 18,633.74 ha, 81% of which was for vegetables (38%), rice (26%), grains except for rice (7%), root vegetables (5%), sugarcane (4%) and peanuts (1%).
Crops planted in Dongguan mainly include vegetables, grains, root vegetables and soybeans. The total crop planting area reached 24,520.55 ha in 2013 and 82.60% of which was for vegetables.
Crops planted in Zhongshan mainly include vegetables, rice, peanuts, and soybeans. In 2013, Zhongshan had a crop planting area of 45,819.36 ha, 64.80% of which was for vegetables (51.60%) and rice (13.20%).
In 2013, crop planting area in Shenzhen hit 5,431.47 ha, 5,420.60 ha or 99% of which was for vegetables; fruit (mainly litchi and citrus) planting area reached 2,535.67 ha and 2,139.13 ha or 84% of which was for litchi.

Guangzhou has a cultivated area of 84,567.32 ha in 2013. In 2013, the top 3 districts (county level administrative units, the same hereinafter) by cultivated area were: Zengcheng District (27% of the total in Guangzhou), Panyu District (21%) and Conghua District (16%).
- Pesticide usage amount
In 2013, a total of 3,222 tonnes of pesticides were consumed in Guangzhou, 2.86% of the provincial total. The top three districts by pesticide usage amount were Conghua, Zengcheng and Nansha districts, 20%, 17% and 17% of the total in the city respectively.

*Flowers: the combined planting area in Panyu, Nansha and Liwan districts accounted for 62% of the total in Guangzhou
*Sugarcane: Nansha District had the largest planting area, 87% of the total in Guangzhou
*Peanuts: the combined planting area in Conghua, Zengcheng and Huadu accounted for 92% of the total in Guangzhou
- Fruit planting
Litchi, longan, bananas (plantains) and citrus are widely planted in Guangzhou. In 2014, the combined planting area of these fruits in Guangzhou reached 62,095 ha. Specifically:
*Litchi: planting area of 30,770 ha, mainly concentrated in Conghua and Zengcheng districts (81.80% of the total in Guangzhou)
*Longan: planting area of 7,817 ha, mainly concentrated in Conghua, Zengcheng and Huadu districts (76.35% of the total in Guangzhou)
*Bananas (plantains): planting area of 4,860 ha, mainly concentrated in Zengcheng and Nansha districts (82.69% of the total in Guangzhou)
*Citrus: planting area of 3,256 ha, mainly concentrated in Conghua and Zengcheng districts (92.35% of the total in Guangzhou)
