Cultural Icon Mama Dip's to Celebrate 40 Years of Restaurant Service in Chapel Hill With Free Dessert and Contests
Mama Dip's, the heartbeat of Southern Cuisine in Chapel Hill, is celebrating 40 years of service.

Customers that day will enjoy free pumpkin cake at the famous restaurant at 408 W. Rosemary Street in Chapel Hill. Mama Dip's is also proud to announce a children's "Favorite Food" drawing contest, where the winner will receive a birthday party for 10 children at Mama Dip's restaurant. The contest begins 11/15/2016 and runs through 12/15/2016. All drawings should be mailed to 408 W. Rosemary Street in Chapel Hill.
Mildred "Mama Dip" Council founded the now-iconic eatery on November 15, 1976 by request of a realtor who sought a hero to save a failing restaurant. With just $64 to her name, Mildred bought groceries for her first meal to be served. She reinvested those profits and her legacy grew from there.
Life, as Mildred explains, is like a pumpkin seed. A single seed can flower forth bountiful harvests, incredible memories, and limitless potential.
"From the children stopping by admiring the pumpkin lantern, neighbors enjoying the pumpkin pies to animals eating pumpkin seeds outside, I told myself that so much happiness came from only those pumpkin seeds," Mildred said. "My life, through this pumpkin seed, brought so much happiness and joy."
Mildred has since become a staple of not only the African American and Chapel Hill communities, but beyond as well. Born April,11th 1929, Mildred has been featured on Good Morning America, Southern Living and Cooking Live on the Food Network. She has written two noteworthy books, Mama Dip's Kitchen and Mama Dip's Family Cookbook, in which she shares not only recipes, but stories life stories as well.
