Cyber Black Friday or Cyber Monday? Black Friday Sales are Early and Online
- Kmart, Best Buy launch early Black Friday sales joining Sears
- Cyber Black Friday, the kickoff to the online shopping season, is November 26
NEW YORK, Nov 4, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- "Is Black Friday Moving Online and Is Black Friday Becoming the New Cyber Monday?" asked The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times (respectively) last year. Given the choice of getting a Black Friday HDTV deal for the same price (with free shipping) online or in a store, more shoppers would rather stay at home and shop online, according to a new survey by eCoupons.com. Because of this shift, nearly 80% of retailers surveyed will be offering online Black Friday deals this year, with bigger or matching discounts than on Cyber Monday.
According to Talya Schaeffer, founder of CyberBlackFriday.com, "The shift to a 'Cyber Black Friday' started last year when retailers became more aggressive with early discounts." This weekend, Kmart is launching a "Better than Black Friday" sale while Best Buy has a "Shop Early, Save Big" event. For the second consecutive weekend, Sears is having another 2-Day Black Friday Now Sale. Schaeffer added, "Major retailers are having early Black Friday sales because shoppers are not only looking for Black Friday ads to preview in store sales, but are increasingly looking to buy early if the price is right and to spread out spending during the holiday shopping season."
According to the annual National Retail Federation Black Friday shopping survey, 195 million shoppers visited stores and websites over Black Friday weekend in 2009, up from 172 million in 2008. One-fourth of Americans shopping over the Black Friday weekend (28.5% or 49 million) shopped online. The CyberBlackFriday.com survey found a slight uptick with 30% of adults aged 25 to 34 planning to shop online on Black Friday 2010.
CyberBlackFriday.com expects more than 1000 retailers to offer online Black Friday sales.
