David Ruby of Ruby+Associates Receives Prestigious AISC Lifetime Achievement Award for Structural Steel Design
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., May 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- David I. Ruby, PE, SE, SECB, F. ASCE, Chairman and Founding Principal of Ruby+Associates, received the Designer Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) at the 2011 NASCC: The Steel Conference in Pittsburgh, PA.
Ruby is widely recognized as an incomparable structural engineering resource. Throughout his 50+ years in the industry, Ruby has been a pioneer and leader in constructability, and possesses a widely recognized ability to review design drawings and quickly, innately determine constructability. Ruby's wisdom is seen, unmistakably, on every Ruby+Associates engineering project – most often through their remarkable impact on cost, schedule and successful project delivery.
"To me, engineering has always been a fascinating game where we are constantly presented with challenges and opportunities to implement new ideas," said Ruby. "It's imagination and innovation that fuels the growth of the industry – not copying what has been done before. I'd like to think that I've made a difference and advanced knowledge of steel construction because I've always felt that as a professional, you have that obligation. As designers, we have responsibility to construction of the structure, not just analysis and beam selection. Ruby+Associates' focus on Constructability reflects this philosophy."
Through innovative Constructability solutions, Ruby and his company consistently save clients both time and money by anticipating construction issues and collaborating with project partners to find innovative, pragmatic solutions. Ruby's experiences in the field of constructability were documented in his 2009 publication, Constructability of Structural Steel Buildings, an AISC Design Guide.
Ruby's career highlights include an early stint at American Bridge where he was a Project Engineer for Chicago's landmark John Hancock Building and the Sears Tower, now the Willis Tower, and the Embarcardero Center in San Francisco. From there, Ruby became Chief Structural Engineer with John Portman & Associates in Atlanta where he designed the Renaissance Center in Detroit. At Ruby+Associates, Ruby's work has impacted numerous marquee projects in healthcare, education, entertainment, stadia, automotive, aviation, bridges and office and high-rise projects.
"I've had the opportunity to work with so many talented engineers," said Ruby. "Part of my enthusiasm for this award is that I know many of the others who have also received it. I am honored and humbled to be considered among them. I've had such a fun and fulfilling career, mostly because I love what I do and I do what I love."
The AISC Award recognizes Ruby for his outstanding contributions to the structural steel design, construction and academic community.
