FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- David Ruby, PE, SE, Founder of Ruby + Associates and a nationally recognized pioneer in constructability, was honored with the Structural Engineers Association of Michigan's (SEAMI) Award as 2010 Structural Engineer of the Year. The award was presented May 20th at a reception in Farmington Hills.
During the presentation, Ruby was referred to as a founding father of SEAMI and an important mentor to young engineers. Ruby's interest in supporting engineering talent has helped him and his firm find the best and brightest team members who share a passion for problem solving and love of a challenge.
"My work has always been a fascinating game where we're constantly presented with challenges and opportunities to implement new ideas," said Ruby. "Our overriding goal is always to find innovative and cost effective solutions for our clients and we've had a lot of success doing it. I thank my clients, my family, and the team at Ruby – who are often one and the same – for their incredible enthusiasm and dedication to getting the job done right. Working alongside all of them has been my greatest reward."
Ruby's career highlights include an early stint at American Bridge where he was structural project manager for Chicago's John Hancock Building and the Sears Tower. From there, Ruby worked with John Portman Associates in Atlanta where he worked on the Renaissance Center in Detroit and the Embarcadero Center in San Francisco. Ruby started the firm which bears his name in 1984.
Ruby has been recognized as an industry icon with an uncanny ability to look at a design drawing and quickly and innately determine its constructability. He's widely recognized as an incomparable resource and a legend in his field. He, along with Ruby + Associates, the successful firm he created in 1984, have a long history of saving clients both time and money by anticipating construction issues and collaborating with project partners to find innovative, pragmatic solutions. Ruby's experiences in the field of constructability were documented in his 2009 publication, Constructability of Structure Steel Buildings, a Design Guide published in collaboration with the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).
Ruby and his firm were among the first structural engineering firms to practice constructability – the application of in-depth construction knowledge and real-world experience to achieve the most efficient, effective and extraordinary structural engineering results. This approach bridges the gap between design and construction, and, in doing so, helps clients get faster approvals, shortened schedules and reduced construction costs.
