dBI, Heir to Historic dBASE, Launches 'Introduction To Data' Video Series to Educate America's Youth About Internet's Building Blocks
VESTAL, N.Y., Nov. 15, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- dataBased Intelligence Inc., (dBI) heir to the historic dBASE software program, today announced a 6-part video series to teach school children about data. Entitled "Introduction To Data," the 2-disc set was developed to educate 10-16 year-olds in database fundamentals.
"For students to succeed in this wired world, we believe they must learn about data, itself. It's the building blocks of the Internet," said Don Franck, CEO of dataBased Intelligence.
"Every day, a million gigabytes of new data is added to the Web. That's why the next generation needs to understand what data is, how it's kept, how it's searched, and how it's retrieved. We hope Introduction To Data will be the spark that inspires students to learn more about the fundamentals of our connected world."
The series is taught by Carolyn Charno, a Microsoft-certified instructor, and was specifically developed to supplement a home-schooled curriculum. "Today, to excel, kids really need to know about data. Regrettably, it's rarely taught in schools. Even so-called 'computer classes' don't explain about the data inside those computers," said Ms. Charno.
The series, available on DVD for $149, also includes a free copy of dbEverywhere, a new software program that makes it easy to gather and display live data anywhere. With it, students – or anyone – can develop their own data-driven web sites.
Located in Vestal, NY, directly across the river from IBM's founding location in Endicott, NY -- considered by many to be the birthplace of the computer age -- dataBased Intelligence acquired dBASE in 1999. Created 30 years ago by Ashton-Tate, and popularized by Borland, the .dbf file format is still used today by millions in Fortune 1000 companies and government agencies around the globe.
