Deadline Nears for Health Care Signups
CHARLESTON, W.Va., Dec. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In the holiday season rush, folks should be aware of a deadline for health insurance. Under the new federal health care reform law, people have until Dec. 23 to apply for insurance if they want it to be effective at the start of 2014.
"We understand this is a busy weekend, but if folks can take an hour to apply for insurance and pay their first month's premium, they can have health coverage by Jan. 1," Perry Bryant, executive director of West Virginians for Affordable Health Care, said. "The website is working much better, and people are getting coverage as well as receiving tax credits, depending on income, that will help with premium costs."
Under the Affordable Care Act, open enrollment for health insurance through the health care exchange will end on March 31, 2014. Those who do not sign up for coverage by then could be subject to tax penalties.
