Deanna Petherbridge, UK Artist and Author, Launches U.S. Book Tour for The Primacy of Drawing: Histories and Theories of Practice
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Deanna Petherbridge, the well-known British artist and writer, announces dates for her U.S. book tour for The Primacy of Drawing: Histories and Theories of Practice, recently published by Yale University Press with support from the Metabolic Studio. The tour features three Southern California appearances at prestigious art institutions. These dates offer artists, art historians and the art-interested public the opportunity to hear Petherbridge's unique insights.
This important and original book affirms the significance of drawing as visual thinking in western art from the fifteenth century to the present through an examination of its practice. It is the first book of its kind to address emergent ways of drawing within a richly illustrated trans-historical context. It celebrates artists such as da Vinci, Michelangelo, Durer, Rubens, Rembrandt, Goya, Seurat, Van Gogh, Picasso and Matisse, but also illustrates, analyzes and proposes ways to approach the drawings of many less-familiar artists and the ideas and theories that inform their work.
Petherbridge, through scrutinizing a wide range of drawings in various media, confirms a long historical commitment to the importance of sketching in generating ideas and problem solving, and traces the importance of drawing in the training of artists until well into the twentieth century. With a wide and multi-focused scope, this book is written to appeal to both a specialist Art and Art History readership and a general audience.
Deanna Petherbridge is an artist whose practice is drawing based. She is Visiting Professor of Drawing at the University of the Arts, London and was formerly Professor of Drawing at the Royal College of Art where she established the first doctoral program in the UK.
