A new type of set-top box is appearing in the homes of some pay-TV subscribers. This box, called a home media gateway, supports advanced features such as multi-room personal video recording, streaming IP video, and multi-screen video service (commonly called TV Everywhere).
Some home media gateway products are already well-known. The Hopper by DISH, Comcast's X1, and Liberty Global's Horizon have all received widespread attention. However, other products, such the Freebox Revolution and the ARRIS Moxi Gateway, are also widely being deployed.
This report covers the market for home media gateway set-top box products, with special emphasis on product manufacturers, pay-TV service provider deployments, and market development trends. It specifically focuses on deployments of first-generation home media gateway products and discusses expected product deployments over the next year. It also provides global unit shipment and product revenues forecasts for home media gateway products.
Shipments of Home Media Gateway Products to Surpass 24 Million in 2017; Headed Gateways Dominate Early Deployments
The development of the home media gateway has been underway for a number of years. In fact, the idea that a "media gateway" set-top box-based product might eventually become the centerpiece in the pay-TV household has been floating around the industry for the past decade. However, over the past two years media gateway products, such as Comcast's X1, The Hopper for DISH, and Liberty Global's Horizon platform, have begun to be deployed by pay-TV service providers in North America and Western Europe.
The author's analysis of this growing market segment includes the following key findings:
- Revenues of home media gateway products are projected to reach $2.8 billion in 2013, up from $2.3 billion in 2012. By 2017, we are forecasting worldwide product revenues to surpass $5.8 billion.
- Home media gateway products have high average sales prices (ASPs), which make them attractive to set-top box manufacturers. Currently, ASPs for home media gateway products are around $300 per box, which generally limit the penetration of home media gateways to the high-income household regions of the world. Through 2015, we are projecting that virtually all home media gateway product deployments will be in North America and in Europe.
- Headed gateways continue to account for the lion's share of home media gateway unit shipments. In 2013, only 2% of global unit shipments are projected to be "headless" home media gateways.
- While unit shipments of home media gateway products are on track to grow rapidly, the product segment will remain just a fraction of the worldwide set-top box market. In 2013, home media gateway product shipments will account for just 4% of total global set-top box unit shipments.
