COPLEY, Ohio, June 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In the past decade consumer knowledge and concern over the products they put on their skin has dramatically increased. Increasing bodies of research have validated concerns over chemicals and other toxins found in everything from lotions and shampoos to soaps, deodorants, perfumes, lip balms and even salon hair treatments.
Skin is our largest organ. It is meant to form a protective barrier against the elements and insulate our internal organs from harm. However, it also soaks topically applied products up like a sponge due to its porous nature.
In perfumes and scented products alone, there are an estimated 3,000 chemicals that can be used to make proprietary fragrance blends. Chemical preservatives and antimicrobial agents such as parabens, triclosan and triclocarban are another concern. They have been linked to various types of cancer, hormonal disruption, DNA damage and ADD in children.
Danna Norek, founder of the company Aura Sensory, realized there was a need for better non-toxic body care products. According to Mrs. Norek, "I would try various non-toxic products I found at local health food stores. Though high priced, they often were not as effective as I'd like. I began experimenting with formulating my own all-natural products and my husband found we liked them better than anything store-bought. And so the idea for Aura Sensory natural body, skin and hair care products was born."
The demand for natural personal care products has skyrocketed in the past five years. This upward trend is expected to continue as people become more educated and discerning in reading ingredient labels for potential toxins. California recently became the first state to ban chemicals in the phthalate family over concerns of hormonal disruption in infants. More states are presenting similar laws as we speak.
"For me it began with avoiding parabens. I began to realize how many toxins such as petroleum derivatives, chemical scents, sulfates and other ingredients were in the products I was using on a daily basis and in large quantity. This was when I began to really research safer alternatives and come up with my own formulations for things like acne soap, hand lotion and lip balms. Not only did they give me peace of mind, but to my surprise, they worked much better than the stuff loaded with chemicals!" Norek says.
With so much attention on cancer prevention and chemical exposure, it's no surprise that people are searching for safer and more wholesome alternatives. Norek suggests, "You have to become a well-trained label reader. Avoid buying products with long ingredient lists and unrecognizable chemical names. Do not buy products that use FD&C coloring as colors can contain coal tar and other toxins. Also avoid anything using 'fragrance' as this can mean hundreds of chemicals were used to achieve the scent."
