ATLANTA, June 4, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The United States Patent & Trademark Office has granted U.S. Patent No. 8,388,347 to P.K. Beville, founder and CEO of Atlanta-based Second Wind Dreams, for her Alzheimer's disease and related dementias sensitivity training program known as the Virtual Dementia Tour®. Experienced by more than 500,000 in 17 countries since its creation, the Virtual Dementia Tour® program is a scientifically proven method of building a greater understanding of dementia through the use of patented sensory tools and instruction.
According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, award-winning geriatric specialist Beville's "Systems and Methods for Simulating Effects of Age-Related Cognitive or Physical Decline" provides "a system for allowing a user to experience a simulation of an age-related medical condition." U.S. Patent No. 8,388,347 relates to certain components, elements and functions of the Virtual Dementia Tour® experience.
Thanks to the Virtual Dementia Tour® program, health care professionals, family caregivers, business leaders, consumer advocates, first responders and educators are able to experience for themselves the physical and mental challenges facing the 5.3 million Americans who suffer from Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. In June 2013, it will be introduced to the people of the United Kingdom and a member of Parliament will experience the VDT.
"The solution to Alzheimer's disease today and in the foreseeable future is in developing a better and more personal understanding of the day-to-day challenges facing those with the disease," said P.K. Beville, M.S., founder and CEO of Second Wind Dreams. "The Virtual Dementia Tour® program is the tool that makes that understanding possible."
"America is asleep at the switch waiting for that magic cure for Alzheimer's disease that is still decades away," stated Beville. "We need to take stock of the here and now and develop a deeper understanding of the minds of those with the disease. The Virtual Dementia Tour® program truly sets the standard for creating greater awareness of Alzheimer's and sensitivity for those with dementia."
Proceeds from the sale of Virtual Dementia Tour® program go to support Second Wind Dreams, the international nonprofit organization recognized as the first in the nation to be committed to changing the perception of aging through the fulfillment of dreams for elders.
