PLANTATION, Fla., Feb. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Valentine's Day is here and many are still searching for their soulmate. Their oral care may be the culprit. Bad breath and other oral health issues are one of the top three dating "deal breakers," following an "insanely jealous ex" and "being unemployed," per a DentalPlans.com survey.
People with a healthy smile may have a better chance at finding love. Of those polled, 31 percent said mouths are the facial feature they notice first. Eyes scored slightly higher at 34 percent.
"Exchanging a smile is often how we begin a relationship," said Bill Chase, vice president of marketing for DentalPlans.com. "Taking good care of that smile is important for one's health and social life."
Survey Smile Secrets (Infographic):
Smooching: 29 percent of women kiss their partner before rolling out of bed in the morning; versus 20 percent of men.
Critiques: Women are more comfortable giving appearance critiques. Both sexes are equally at ease mentioning bad breath or food stuck in one's teeth.
Brushing: About 6 in 10 people think women take better care of their teeth than men; 72 percent of the women polled brush their teeth twice daily; versus 55 percent of men.
Hygiene: The most neglected personal hygiene activity is flossing; 41 percent of women polled floss daily; versus 32 percent of men.
Perception: 78 percent of women think they are well-groomed; only 63 percent of men feel that way about themselves.
Dating: Men and women preferred to meet people in-person versus online dating sites; 58 percent rely on friend introductions; 38 percent events; and 30 percent cyber-socializing. Twenty-four percent looked for potential partners at work; and 12 percent at school.
Whether one is in a committed relationship or still searching, a great smile is key.
"Nobody should have to put off their dental care," said Chase. "There are many great options available — no matter how tight one's budget is."
