Department of Defense Prepares for Nov. 4 Midterm Election with New Campaign Launch
Communicates ease of absentee voting, reminds voters deadlines vary by state
WASHINGTON, Oct. 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- As the Nov. 4 midterm election nears, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced today that it is taking steps to ensure absentee voting is even easier for service members, their families and overseas citizens via FVAP.gov – the DoD's Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) Website – and the release of a new campaign aimed to ease first-time voters into the absentee process.
With all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and 36 of the Senate seats at stake during the upcoming midterm elections, the "Voting is Easy" campaign coincides with Absentee Voting Week (Sept. 29 - Oct. 6), launched in coordination with the Military Services and Department of State to raise awareness of the simple steps required to vote absentee and remind voters of important deadlines.
"DoD is working hard to provide the best possible voting assistance for our service members, their eligible family members and overseas citizens," said FVAP director Matt Boehmer. "Our hope is that by raising awareness during Absentee Voting Week, more voters, especially those 18 to 24 year old who make up a large percentage of our Uniformed Services, will know that FVAP.gov is there to help navigate the process."
FVAP.gov provides online tools to guide overseas voters through the process of registering and requesting their ballots. Military members and their voting-age family members who haven't already done so, should visit FVAP.gov to register to vote and request their absentee ballot by selecting their state from the site's dropdown menu. Once they receive it, voters should mark and return the ballots or submit a backup ballot as soon as possible to ensure timely delivery. Because submission and receipt deadlines vary by state, voters should check their states' requirements at FVAP.gov.
Helping make absentee voting more approachable, the DoD's "Voting is Easy" campaign likens voting to the choices — or votes — people make every day such as drinking regular or decaf coffee or deciding to get up or hit the snooze button when the alarm goes off. FVAP works to ensure service members, their eligible family members and overseas citizens are aware of their right to vote and have the tools and resources to successfully do so – from anywhere in the world.
