Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center Earns Award for Clinical Trials Program
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., June 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer is one of six cancer centers nationwide, and the only center in North Carolina, to earn an award for its work in improving access to clinical trials. Given by the Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the award recognizes practices that have established high quality clinical cancer research programs.
"We're very pleased that our center has been singled out for this award," said Tom Grote, MD, an oncologist with Forsyth Regional Cancer Center. "We believe in the importance of providing our patients access to cutting-edge cancer therapies. Throughout 2011, we enrolled about 10 percent of new cancer diagnoses, or about 300 patients, in clinical trials. That number far exceeds the national average of two to three percent."
The Conquer Cancer Foundation selects centers based on several factors, including the total number of patients enrolled in clinical trials, the number of minority and underrepresented populations enrolled and innovative techniques used to overcome barriers to participation in trials.
The Derrick L. Davis Forsyth Regional Cancer Center participates in nearly 100 research trials of preventive and clinical medications and methods, as well as National Cancer Institute-sponsored cancer prevention studies.
