Dilworth Paxson Partner John A. Squires Nominated by President Trump to Head the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
PHILADELPHIA, March 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Dilworth Paxson LLP is pleased to announce that partner John A. Squires has been nominated by President Donald Trump to head the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Since its inception in 1836, the USPTO has granted patents for inventions and registered trademarks to protect intellectual property (IP) rights. These protections ensure that inventors and businesses have exclusive rights to their innovations and brand identities, promoting innovation, economic growth and fair competition. The office also advises the president and other federal agencies on intellectual property policies, protection and enforcement throughout the United States and globally.
"The firm is incredibly proud that President Trump has nominated one of our partners to head the Patent and Trademark Office," said Chairman of Dilworth Paxson, Lawrence McMichael. "John Squires is extremely well qualified for this position and will serve with distinction."
Squires' practice has always been at the forefront of intellectual property issues, advising large and small clients across a wide range of technologies and industry sectors, including bio and pharma/AI, crypto, fintech/regtech cybersecurity and risk. He's co-founded, launched and advised numerous IP and risk-related businesses and their boards, including Regulatory DataCorp, the Risk Assistance Network + Exchange (RANE) and FinClusive.
Squires follows a long line of Dilworth partners who have ascended to high-profile public office:
- Richardson "Dick" Dilworth himself served as Philadelphia District Attorney from 1952 to 1956, Mayor of Philadelphia from 1956 to 1962 and President of the Philadelphia Board of Education from 1965 to 1970.
- William T. Coleman Jr. was a leading figure in some of the most transformational events our nation has experienced, including serving as co-counsel with Thurgood Marshall in the historic Brown v. Board of Education, which ended racial segregation in public schools and as special counsel to the Warren Commission, investigating the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In 1975, Coleman was appointed U.S. Secretary of Transportation, becoming one of the first African Americans to serve as a cabinet member.
- Robert P. "Bob" Casey Sr. served as the 45th Governor of Pennsylvania from 1987 to 1995. One of his notable achievements included creating the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in Pennsylvania, which later became a model for the federal CHIP program.
