Doc Seaman grants to support athletics across the country

CALGARY, Oct. 10, 2013 /CNW/ - The legacy of legendary philanthropist Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman lives on through the $10 million Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund, an endowment Fund established at The Calgary Foundation that is providing much needed support to registered Canadian amateur athletic and ice hockey associations.

"Doc Seaman was passionate about his community and his philanthropy touched all of Canada," says Eva Friesen, President & CEO of The Calgary Foundation. "His passion for amateur sports leaves a lasting legacy with the Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund, and we welcome applications from all parts of the country."

The Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund was established to support:

• all aspects of amateur ice hockey in Canada;
• registered amateur athletic associations and;
• other general charitable purposes

Currently accepting applications until November 12, 2013, the Fund has previously granted over $1.5 million in support of Canadian amateur athletics, including:

• Special Olympics BC Society - Nelson Chapter (B.C.)
• To provide individuals with intellectual disabilities opportunities to enrich their lives and celebrate personal achievement through positive sport experiences; to promote healthy lifestyle choices for improved overall health and wellbeing.
  
  
• Deaf Access Simcoe Muskoka (ONTARIO)
• To provide outdoor adventure camps for deaf and hard of hearing children and youth; to support them in their social and emotional development, learn self-advocacy, and reduce feelings of frustration and isolation, while promoting physical activity and teamwork.
  
  
• Inglis and District Community Club (MANITOBA)
• To make critical improvements to the Inglis Skating Rink, an important community facility that provides affordable and inclusive winter recreational opportunities; to encourage youth to learn about, enjoy and play hockey.
  
  

Qualified donees from across the country are invited to apply for grants from the Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund by November 12, 2013. Application guidelines and forms can be found at www.thecalgaryfoundation.org
