-- More Than One-in-Five U.S. Adults Have Held or Attended a Birthday Party for a Pet --
-- Fifteen Percent Spend More Than $100 Per Month On Their Pets --
WHITING, Ind., May 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Dog person or cat person, Americans love their pets, but when it comes to how much is spent on them, dogs tip the scales. A new CouponCabin.com survey reveals that dog owners typically spend more per month on their furry friends than cat owners. Nearly half (47 percent) of dog owners spend more than $50 per month on their pets, significantly more than the 37 percent of cat owners who spend more than $50 per month on their pets. This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from May 8th – 10th, 2013, among 2,072 U.S. adults ages 18 and older, among which 1,251 are pet owners.
Regardless of the type of pet, animal owners' wallets can be strained taking care of their beloved companions. When pet owners were asked how much they typically spend per month on their pets, they said the following:
- $1 - $50 – 62 percent
- $51 - $100 – 22 percent
- $101 - $200 – 9 percent
- Greater than $200 – 6 percent
To protect themselves financially against unexpected pet care costs, more pet owners are obtaining pet insurance. Nearly one-in-ten (9 percent) pet owners currently have pet insurance, up from 7 percent who said the same last year. Nineteen percent said that although they don't currently have pet insurance, they might be in interested in purchasing it. This is up from 17 percent who said the same last year.
"Despite our best efforts to save money on the care of our pets, the costs can add up quickly," said Jackie Warrick, senior savings adviser at CouponCabin.com. "Whether it's essentials like food and veterinary appointments, or extras like daycare, toys and events, it can be difficult to keep spending in check."
Birthday celebrations are one expensive extra on which pet owners are splurging. More than one-in-five (22 percent) of U.S. adults report they have held or attended a birthday celebration for a pet. Of those that have celebrated a pet's birthday, they spent the following:
- $1 - $19 – 47 percent
- $20 - $49 – 36 percent
- $50 or more – 17 percent
Getting a cake and candles for a birthday celebration is more common for dog owners than cat owners. Nearly one- third (32 percent) of dog owners have had a celebration for a pet, compared to only 25 percent of cat owners.
Funerals and memorial services are also events pet owners hold to honor their beloved animal friends. Sixteen percent of U.S. adults report they have held or attended a funeral or memorial service for a pet.
