Dr. Kalam served as India's leader between 2002 and 2007, and was popularly known as the "People's President" and the "Missile Man" because he sought to support technological innovation in order to advance India's weapons technology.
Mr. Anand Mahindra, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. said "Dr. Kalam has left a lasting legacy for all Indians by serving as an astute leader with an affable personality. His keen interest in scientific advancement and sound knowledge of nuclear physics has been key in the progress made by India as a technology power house. We are honored to have Dr. Kalam deliver the lecture instituted in the memory of my late father Mr. Harish Mahindra."
Recently, Mr. Anand Mahindra gave USD 10 million for the Humanities Center at Harvard. Now called the Mahindra Humanities Center, it is a platform for dialogue amongst Harvard faculty, faculty from other area institutions, graduate students, undergraduates, and the public. The Center aims to foster collaboration between the humanities, social sciences, and sciences in the belief that the humanities make a unique contribution in establishing -- through interpretation and conversation -- communities of interest and climates of opinion.
