YPSILANTI, Mich., April 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Eastern Michigan University today officially welcomed Dr. Brendan B. Kelly as its 24th president, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the 177‑year‑old institution. Kelly, a two‑time EMU graduate, Flint native, and nationally recognized higher education leader, assumes the presidency following his service as president-elect beginning March 1. His appointment follows the retirement of President James Smith after nearly a decade of service.
Kelly arrives with a distinguished record of leadership across multiple universities, including service as president of the Arkansas State University System, president of the University of West Georgia, appointment as interim president of the University of South Carolina, and chancellor of University of South Carolina Upstate. His career has been defined by student-centered innovation, financial stewardship, and community partnership-building.
Board Chair Nate Ford: "A leader ready for this moment."
EMU Board of Regents Chair Nate Ford said Kelly's first official day marks an important moment for the University and the communities it serves.
"Dr. Kelly brings vision, resilience, and a collaborative spirit to Eastern," Ford said. "He understands the urgency of this moment in higher education and the importance of moving decisively. His experience, his values, and his deep connection to this institution make him the right leader to guide EMU forward."
Ford noted that Kelly's deep institutional roots – both as an alumnus and former EMU faculty member – position him uniquely to lead Eastern into its next era.
President Kelly: "We don't have a minute to waste."
In remarks on his first day, Kelly emphasized the urgency, optimism, and forward momentum that will define his presidency.
"This work is personal to me," Kelly said. "Eastern Michigan University shaped my life – first as a student, then as a scholar, and now as a leader. Today is not just a beginning; it's a call to action. We don't have a minute to waste. Our students are counting on us, our communities are counting on us, and the state of Michigan is counting on us.
"We will move quickly and boldly," he continued. "We will expand opportunity, strengthen student success, and tell Eastern's story with unapologetic pride and intentionality. Every day, we will work to earn the trust placed in us and to deliver the kind of education that transforms students into the refined talent industry is seeking."
A Homecoming Rooted in Eastern's Mission
Kelly earned both his bachelor's degree in public relations and master's degree in communication from EMU before completing his Ph.D. in political communication and rhetoric at Wayne State University. Early in his career, he served at EMU as Assistant Director of Forensics and a Lecturer in Communication and Theatre Arts, making today's return a meaningful homecoming for both him and his wife, Dr. Tressa Kelly, also a two‑time EMU alumna and longtime educator.
A Pivotal Time for EMU and Higher Education
Kelly assumes leadership at a moment when universities nationwide face questions about affordability, workforce readiness, and the evolving needs of students and employers. His background in enrollment growth, academic innovation, and community engagement aligns directly with EMU's mission and future direction.
