Through her vision, leadership, and hard work, Dr. Snider assembled a team that created a state-of-the-art school for children who have dyslexia. She recruited teachers and instilled in them Summit's science-based and results-based approach to teaching. During Summit's early years, she moved the new school from one temporary campus to another, while fundraising, acquiring, and building the school's permanent campus which is situated on 15 acres in Edgewater, MD. Since its inception in 1989, The Summit School has helped more than 1,800 students through its day school, tutoring services, testing services, and summer camp programs.
For her outstanding achievements, Dr. Snider has received more than 13 awards and honors, such as Maryland's Top 100 Women in 1999, SmartCEO's Brava! Women Business Achievement Award in 2011, and recently the YWCA's Tribute to Women and INdustry (TWIN) Award in 2012. Dr. Snider's efforts have raised millions of dollars for The Summit School which will ensure the future of the school's program.
Dr. Snider has been instrumental in recruiting her successor, Dr. Joan Mele-McCarthy. Dr. Mele-McCarthy was an early friend and advisor to Summit, developing the school's speech/language program before accepting a political appointment as senior policy advisor in the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Mele-McCarthy returned to Summit in 2005 as the Director of Education and, now, Head of School. Dr. Mele-McCarthy will take on the role of Executive Director after Dr. Snider steps down.
