Dr. Jarstad and Evergreen Eye Center Implant First Accommodative, Astigmatism Correcting Artificial Lens in the Pacific Northwest
SEATTLE, June 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- John S. Jarstad, M.D., Medical Director and CEO of Evergreen Eye Centers located in Federal Way, Auburn, Burien and Enumclaw, has become the first eye surgeon in the Pacific Northwest to implant the Crystalens Trulign Toric Artificial Lens for correcting astigmatism and presbyopia. Dr. Jarstad is one of a handful of surgeons nationwide selected to perform implants of the Trulign Toric lens in patients.
The Crystalens Trulign artificial lens was granted full FDA approval on May 21, 2013 for the correction of vision after cataract surgery in patients who in the past would not qualify for surgery due to astigmatism. "This gives eye surgeons another important tool in the correction of vision after cataract surgery," stated Dr. Jarstad from his Federal Way facility. "The Crystalens Trulign has an exceptional safety record in early clinical trials and remains stable inside the eye to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and now astigmatism following cataract surgery.
"We are excited to see the improved accuracy and successful outcomes we are now finding when combining the Crystalens Trulign with the new femtosecond laser robotic assisted cataract procedure here at Evergreen Eye Center," Dr. Jarstad noted.
Toni Overmyer, the first Crystalens Trulign astigmatism correcting lens patient in the Pacific Northwest to have this new technology IOL, was told she would always have a lazy eye and could only see the big 'E' on the eye chart due to high amounts of astigmatism. On her first day after cataract surgery at Evergreen Eye Center she was nearly 20/20 without glasses for the first time.
In addition to Dr. Jarstad, Dr. Gary Chung and Dr. Robert Tester, both eye surgeons at Evergreen Eye Center, will be using the new technology lens.
Evergreen Eye Center is no stranger to innovation and medical firsts. It was the first clinic in Washington to perform cataract surgery without stitches in 1990, to use a foldable lens implant in 1989, and to use an acrylic lens in 1995. It was one of the first clinics to perform LASIK in the United States starting in 1998. Evergreen Eye Center remains the only eye center in Washington State with the femtosecond laser for bladeless laser cataract surgery and is now the first clinic in Washington State to implant the Crystalens Trulign astigmatism correcting intraocular lens.
