Dr. Jeffrey Brenner to Speak at Community Care Recovery Conference
PITTSBURGH, April 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Jeffrey Brenner, MD, who has gained national recognition for his work in improving the quality of medical care to the underserved, will present a keynote address at the annual Community Care Recovery Conference, "Changing Behaviors to Improve Our Health," scheduled for Thursday, April 9, 2015 at the Omni William Penn Hotel, Downtown.
Dr. Brenner, a 2013 MacArthur Award winner, is a family practice physician and the Chief Executive Officer of the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers. The Coalition is a nine-year-old strategic initiative with a mission to improve the quality, capacity, and accessibility of the health care system for vulnerable populations in the city of Camden. His efforts to build an integrated, health delivery model to provide better care for Camden residents have been featured in The New Yorker, and in an episode of "Frontline" on PBS.
"We have to stop giving up on poor people," Dr. Brenner said in a 2014 interview. "There is a feeling that it's the patients' fault that their care process isn't going well, and that the health care system has done everything it can do and the rest is up to the patient.
"We spend money in the wrong places, delivering the wrong services at the wrong time and this is about rethinking how we deliver care."
Dr. Brenner is also the Medical Director of the Urban Health Institute, which employs modern business techniques to redesign long-standing clinical care models in order to deliver better care at lower cost.
Dr. Brenner's topic will be "How Medical Systems Can Support Healthier Communities."
Also speaking at the conference will be Diane P. Holder, President and CEO of UPMC Health Plan, which is part of Pittsburgh medical system UPMC's integrated delivery and financing system (IDFS). The UPMC IDFS has been cited as a possible national model for other health systems in terms of delivering quality health care while holding down medical costs. Ms. Holder's talk is titled "The Changing Paradigm of American Health Care."
James Schuster, MD, MBA, VP of Behavioral Integration at the UPMC Insurance Division and Chief Medical Officer of Community Care Behavioral Health Organization, will speak on "The Key Role of Behavioral Health in Health Care Transformation." Lyndra Bills, MD, Regional Medical Director for Community Care, will speak on "Wellness Strategies for Individuals with Serious Mental Illness."
The conference is intended for individuals in recovery, their families, social workers, psychiatrists, nurses, certified peer specialists, and others interested in behavioral health services. The conference is free to Community Care members and their families.
The conference is set for 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, April 9, 2015, at the Omni Westin William Penn Hotel, 530 William Penn Place, Downtown.
