Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai Systems Biologist & MIT Alumnus Will Share Solution for National Opioid Epidemic at Press Conference
Press Conference: Thursday, August 3, 2017, 11:00 AM EDT, at 701 Concord Avenue, in Cambridge, MA
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 2, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai, scientist and MIT-trained systems biologist, who holds four degrees from MIT, including his PhD in Biological Engineering and founder of the Systems Health Institute, will hold a press conference at the Institute's headquarters located at 701 Concord Avenue, in Cambridge, MA on August 3, 2017, starting at 11:00 AM EDT to share a proven systems-based solution for addressing the national opioid epidemic. The solution emerges from the efforts of doctors who field-tested the solution across nearly 250,000 patients over a period 20 years.
"Real solutions do exist for big problems. Unfortunately, the network of health insurance and pharmaceutical lobbyists suppress proven and innovative approaches to health and well-being if they can't make a buck out of it," said Dr. Shiva. "The suppression of this proven and existing treatment methodology for addressing the opioid epidemic exemplifies how this self-serving network has denied low-cost, lifesaving solutions to our citizens, by being more concerned for its own profits."
Dr. Shiva's analysis reveals that the current reductionist and unscientific approaches, be it segregation of the addicted individuals in rehabilitation centers or aggregating people in methadone clinics, does not address the critical issue of actually getting people off of opioids. In contrast, the "holistic systems-based approach," which he will discuss at the press conference, has helped over 50% of users of this solution continuously stay off opioids for one year, where sobriety is the agreed upon benchmark. It is the only time-tested solution of its kind. Conventional programs, during a similar one-year period, have had a success rate of only 2% to 3%, at best.
Given the growing recognition among policy makers that the opioid epidemic is likely a national emergency, the Institute aims to provide an open source vehicle to educate qualified physicians, policy makers and allied health workforce, with this much-needed knowledge to enable them to affect dramatic and positive outcomes, here and now.
