MCLEAN, Va., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Siegal's Direct Nutritionals, LLC, the global distributor of Dr. Siegal's COOKIE DIET® brand products, today announced that it has begun shipping renowned physician, author, and weight-loss expert Dr. Sanford Siegal's internationally popular cookies to more than 7,000 Walgreens stores throughout the United States. The decision to make the company's products available at all Walgreens stores follows successful test marketing on Walgreens.com and at over 200 Walgreens stores from coast-to-coast. Walgreens.com also carries Dr. Siegal's COOKIE DIET® brand shake mixes and Dr. Siegal's latest book, Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet Book: How a Doctor and His Cookie Helped 500,000 People Lose Weight Fast (2009, Hyde Park Publishing Ltd., 320 pages, ISBN 978-0-9822728-3-19999).

"We couldn't be more pleased with the success our products have enjoyed at hundreds of Walgreens stores during the past few months and we're confident that they'll perform well chainwide," said Matthew Siegal, president and CEO of Dr. Siegal's Direct Nutritionals, LLC.  "When they finish arriving at more than 7,000 Walgreens stores over the next few weeks, Dr. Siegal's COOKIE DIET® products will be available at nearly 10,000 retail outlets."

Sanford Siegal, D.O., M.D., conceived the idea of a diet based on a hunger-satisfying cookie in the early 1970s while writing a book about natural substances in foods that suppress hunger. He decided to engineer a food specifically to help his patients stick to the low-calorie diet that he advocates.  Dr. Siegal produced a formula for a proprietary mixture of amino acids that resulted from combining certain food substances and baked it into cookies that he gave to a few patients. Dr. Siegal's COOKIE DIET® was an overnight success. His South Florida medical practice soon expanded to 14 clinics and he began supplying his cookies and other foods to hundreds of other doctors.

In 2007, Dr. Siegal and his son, Matthew Siegal, the company's CEO, began offering their cookies, shake mixes, and other products to the general public through www.CookieDiet.com (which has 120,000 members) and retailers, including Walgreens, GNC, and Samsclub.com. Despite his brand's explosive growth, Dr. Siegal still personally mixes every batch of his proprietary protein formula with his own hands in his Miami bakery.

Although copycat products have recently appeared, Dr. Siegal's original cookie-based diet continues to command a nearly 100 percent share of voice in the press and is perpetually in the news. Dr. Siegal has been profiled by Good Morning America, The View, The New York Times, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal. Entertainment Tonight, and hundreds of other media. Recent stories include:
