PORTLAND, Maine, Dec. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- When Dr. Verne Weisberg left the security of two successful institutional positions at Yale University and the VA Hospital at West Haven, Connecticut to open his own plastic surgery practice Portland, Maine, people thought he was crazy.

Though he and his wife fell in love with the beautiful seaside community, the common refrain was that nobody in that region would be interested in the kind of cosmetic surgery he specialized in. His ability to develop a successful cosmetic surgery practice at Yale University convinced him that he could to it anywhere.

Daring as he was to start building a practice from scratch, Dr. Weisberg agreed with them for a time, and wondered if he would spend most of his time with patients who needed his expertise in reconstructive surgery after traumatic injuries and cancer surgeries.

Then there was the security of the high level positions he chose to give up to pursue a full time private practice. In 1987, Dr. Weisberg was appointed Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery by Yale, where he taught the General Surgery and Plastic Surgery residents while developing the first university based aesthetic surgery practice on his own. At the same time, he was appointed Chief of Plastic Surgery at the VA Hospital in West Haven. Having started to use plates and screws in surgeries as the attending surgeon at Yale, he was also one of the first doctors to do a major maxillo-facial surgery (fixing issues with facial bones) in Maine.

When he first arrived in Portland, he teamed with two other surgeon friends from Yale – a neurosurgeon and ENT/ Head and Neck surgeon – at a local hospital to do the first ever craniofacial reconstructive surgery to correct deformities caused by the congenital cheek and eye bone clefting of Treacher-Collins Syndrome. The hospital was nervous about taking on the risk, but Dr. Weisberg continued to do surgeries that helped people who had deformities after suffering traumas.  

Soon, however, he realized that there was a larger need for the kind of cosmetic surgery he loved doing than first anticipated. Recognized as "Best of 2012 Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeons" by Plastic Surgery Practice magazine, Dr. Weisberg has developed the premier Aesthetic Surgical Practice in northern New England over the past 25 years.
