Drive For Men's Health: One Tesla. Millions Of Men. 24-hours.
From the Sunshine State to the Empire State - Surgeons Hit the Road Using Technology to Help Start a Healthy Conversation with Men
CLERMONT, Fla., June 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of National Men's Health Week (June 9-15, 2014), robotic surgeons Drs. Jamin Brahmbhatt and Sijo Parekattil, of The PUR Clinic, are leaving the operating room behind and hitting the highway on Thursday, June 12th, to get men talking about health issues. The two urologists know these conversations can be uncomfortable, so they've added cars and technology to entice the guys to open up. The two have planned the first ever Drive for Men's Health (Drive4MensHealth.com) – a 24-hour road trip from Central Florida to Manhattan.
The Florida-based physicians will drive approximately 1,100 miles in an all-electric TESLA - stopping only to recharge the vehicle (every 150-200 miles). During each stop, they will host community-wide, men's health events, which will include educational lectures and patient discussions. While on the road, the doctors will use Google Glass and Go-Pro cameras to broadcast their journey live, discuss men's health issues, interview physicians from around the world via webcast, and answer health-related questions through social media.
The two young doctors have always been a bit unconventional in their approach, and they hope this week's stunt will be another way to get men everywhere to join the conversation - - including the topics that might be hard to discuss.
"Men are more likely to die of heart disease, stroke and cancer, and yet, men are much less likely to go to the doctor and get screened," says Jamin Brahmbhatt, MD. "That's why our goal for each community we visit is to get men motivated and make their health a priority."
Scheduled stops include: Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New York. The drive will conclude with multi-specialty, physician health talks including: the future of men's health, innovation in male infertility, chronic testicular/groin pain, and genomics in men's health. There will also be a meet-and greet with members of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce.
While on the road, the doctors will provide up to the minute updates via social media, video broadcasts, blogs and other additional outlets.
"We recognize the urgent need for men to better understand their health," says Sijo Parekattil, MD. "And what better way to spread the word than by utilizing technology and uniting leading physicians to make an impact on men's health?"
The kickoff of the Drive for Men's Health will be on Thursday, June 12th at South Lake Hospital in Clermont, FL with opening remarks beginning at 8:00 AM, and ribbon cutting & departure scheduled for 8:30 AM. The final stop will be at the Tesla Showroom in Manhattan at approximately 8:00 AM on Friday, June 13th.
All funds that are raised through sponsors and the website, will be used to support a men's health genetic research study, and to provide educational scholarships to Florida Polytechnic University. The Drive for Men's Health team would like to thank: Genomic Health, PUR Clinic, South Lake Hospital, Aloka-Hitachi, and Intuitive Surgical.
