LOS ANGELES, Sept. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Independent filmmakers Jonathan Ehlers, Patrick Ward-Perkins and Jenine Mayring will donate a portion of the proceeds from their upcoming feature film DRY, a post-apocalyptic western about water scarcity, to charity: water, a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.
Award-winning producer Jenine Mayring (Telly Awards, Davey Awards) commented, "As philanthropic filmmakers, we passionately believe that we can produce profitable films that simultaneously give back to our communities. So we came up with a revolutionary new idea: for each film we produce, we will align ourselves with a charity specific to that particular film."
Almost a billion people on the planet don't have access to clean drinking water. Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. "As storytellers, we felt a powerful urge and responsibility to explore the societal ramifications if water became the most powerful commodity on earth. Soberingly, some argue that it already is," said Jonathan Ehlers and Patrick Ward-Perkins, the writer/director duo and creators of the high-concept film, a Brooklyn Girl Productions/LoneShark Studios production.
One in eight people on the planet drinks water that's likely to make them sick. The water crisis and poverty go hand-in-hand. "Water is an astonishingly complex and subtle force in an economy. It is the single constraint on the expansion of every city, and bankers and corporate executives have cited it as the only natural limit to economic growth," says Margaret Catley-Carlson, Vice-Chair, World Economic Forum.
