Dwell On Design Is Back And Bigger Than Ever
DWELL TURNS 300,000 SF OF THE LOS ANGELES CONVENTION CENTER INTO A 3-DAY DESIGN LABORATORY
LOS ANGELES, March 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Dwell on Design LA, now the largest design event in the U.S., returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center June 20-22, 2014. This unique 3-day event offers continuous content from over 200 top minds in design, dynamic exhibitions by more than 400 exhibitors, and unparalleled educational opportunities. With nearly 300,000 square feet to be transformed into worlds of inspiration and activity, from Dwell Outdoor to the Modern Family Pavilion to the Tech Zone, this year's 30,000+ attendees will find themselves immersed in new ideas for modern living.
Dwell is also thrilled to welcome the return of our industry partner, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), who will host their National Leadership Conference at Dwell on Design. Thousands of designers from around the country are expected to attend again this year, and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be offered through onstage programming and in breakout rooms. Friday, June 20, is trade day and will cater to designers, architects, and construction professionals.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Stephen Burks
Dwell is pleased to announce American designer Stephen Burks as the keynote speaker for Dwell on Design 2014. Burks, along with his studio Readymade Projects, has taken a multifaceted approach to design, resulting in collaborations with international brands (Dedon, Calligaris, Missoni) while establishing his own philanthropy- and craft-driven initiatives in under-recognized communities across the globe. Burks will discuss his passion for craft and impart lessons for young designers on how to marry personal goals with marketable design. DWELL ON DESIGN AWARDS: Dwell is proud to host the fourth-annual juried Dwell on Design Awards, which honor the exhibitors whose commitment and vision bring this event to life. Awards are distributed across eleven categories including: Kitchen and Bath, Design Materials, Sustainability, Furniture, Lighting, Outdoor, Modern Lifestyle, Overall - Best Booth Design, Overall – Best, New Product, Overall - Best in Show.

YOUNG GUNS: NEW MATERIALS, NEW WORLD
This year's Young Guns program will focus on emerging designers, architects, students and their mentors within our exhibition halls and onstage programming. Spotlight on: industrial designer and curator Jonathan Olivares, furniture maker Al Que Quiere, and designer Brandan Ravenhill.
Also taking the stage will be Young Gun Alvin Huang—lead designer of Synthesis Design + Architecture (SDA) in Los Angeles—who joins us to discuss the use of new materials in such projects as the [C]Space Pavilion, the winning entry in the Architectural Association Design Research Lab 10 Pavilion Competition. Huang also recently won a competition with his Pure Tension Solar Pavilion for Volvo, which acts as a mobile car charging station. The team from the interdisciplinary firm Commune Design—Pam Shamshiri, Ramin Shamshiri, Roman Alonso, and Steven Johanknecht—joins us to talk about their part in revitalizing the city of L.A., from their work on the city's major residential multiuse projects to the recently opened Ace Hotel downtown.
ENERGY 360: HOW WATER SHAPED LOS ANGELES
If water helped make Los Angeles a place of possibilities, what could the ongoing drought mean for the city? Los Angeles Times book critic David Ulin will join us onstage to consider where drought-ravaged L.A. is headed.
REVITALIZING DOWNTOWN WITH RIOS CLEMENTI HALE
As part of the ongoing efforts of the architects, designers, and community of Los Angeles to elevate its urban core to its greatest potential, the respected firm Rios Clementi Hale has completely redesigned Grand Park.
ON THE SHOW FLOOR
New to DOD this year are five DOD PAVILIONS, curated thematically by our Dwell editors.
- ENERGY 360 PAVILION: The pavilion showcases new technologies that advance the built environment, focusing on smart home technology. The goal is to help our audience live better, and be better informed about the energy choices they make.
- DESIGN FOR HUMANKIND: This series track is devoted to issues that explore how good design makes our lives better by protecting our quality of life. We span topics from Aging in Place to Accessible Design. Also, a Universal Design home on the show floor will demonstrate accessible UD elements like "smart carpets," which utilize sensors to determine unusual foot patterns or if someone has fallen.
- SCANDINAVIAN PAVILION: Dwell celebrates the unique modern design heritage found in Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Denmark, inviting young designers, furniture and technology companies and product manufacturers to share their latest creations and concepts.
- MODERN FAMILY PAVILION: This pavilion offers innovative architecture and design solutions that address the myriad needs, configurations, and challenges that make a house a home.
- DESIGN FOR TOMORROW: This student exhibition space will showcase student work in the form of multi-media, mixed media, models and drawings from top area schools including UCLA AUD, USC School of Architecture, SCI-ARC, Otis, Georgia Tech, UCLA Extension and the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.
RESOURCE FURNITURE & GEORGIA TECH'S ZERO ENERGY DESIGN HOUSING (ZEDH):
Georgia Tech students majoring in architecture, high performance building, and engineering are collaborating to research, design, engineer and build a four- to ten-unit net zero energy house prototype. This prototype will then become a living laboratory for ultra-low energy efficiency testing and other related research. At year's end, each student will submit a residential interior design and a panel of renowned designers and architects will select the winning design, which will be showcased at Dwell on Design LA.
