E-Bike Injuries Explode 3000 Percent, New Report Warns of Micromobility Safety Crisis
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A shocking new analysis reveals just how dangerous America's streets have become for micromobility riders. According to Avian Law Group's Micromobility Accident Report 2025, e-bike injuries have surged from 751 in 2017 to more than 23,000 in 2022 - a staggering 3,000% increase.
E-scooter riders have fared no better. Annual injuries skyrocketed from 8,500 to nearly 57,000 in the same period. In 2022 alone, micromobility injuries jumped 21% over the previous year, underscoring what safety experts are calling a "public health emergency on wheels."
Head Injuries and Helmet Gaps
The report paints a disturbing picture of rider safety. In one Austin study, 15% of injured riders suffered traumatic brain injuries, yet fewer than 1% wore helmets. These findings highlight a glaring gap in rider safety awareness and infrastructure protections.
Malfunctions, Roads and Liability
The dangers are not limited to rider behavior. Avian Law Group points to defective brakes, lithium-ion battery fires, and poorly maintained roads as critical contributors to single-vehicle crashes. Liability in such cases may fall on negligent drivers, manufacturers, or even municipalities that fail to provide safe infrastructure.
Cities Respond Slowly
Some cities are beginning to act. Las Vegas has reduced micromobility speed limits to 15 mph and introduced helmet requirements for minors, while Clark County is working to align its policies. But overall, the report concludes that cities are moving far too slowly to keep pace with explosive micromobility adoption.
A Call to Action
"Micromobility is here to stay, but the injury rates prove urgent reform is overdue," said Michael Avanesian, Esq, Founder and Attorney at Avian Law Group. "We must demand safer streets, stronger product safety standards, and more consistent rider protections before the crisis worsens."
The firm recommends immediate safety measures: helmet use, speed moderation, visibility gear for riders, and aggressive infrastructure investments by cities.
