Wondering how to make Earth Day fun with kids? Here are some savvy green ideas from Tanille Edwards, author of the children's book "Jordan & Justine's Weekend Adventures: Go Go Green:"
First, explain to children what going green means. Going green is doing things in a way that will benefit the environment. Next, give them simple everyday examples of going green to illustrate the meaning. Like, one way to go green is to recycle our garbage. You may choose to take things a step further and explain that our food waste is biodegradable, but many of the items we use are made out of materials that don't biodegrade as easily. And define biodegrading as breaking down and going back into the earth.
Remember to give kids a variety of ways to be green. Variety makes green fun, convenient and adventurous. A common misconception is that going green is an act. Going green is a lifestyle!
As landscapes become subject to urban sprawl there are fewer places for animals to dwell. Inspired by "Jordan & Justine's Weekend Adventures: Go Go Green" here are some fun ideas to help children love the animals we share the earth with:
Pick one animal a week and learn about that particular animal. What kind of habitat does it thrive in? What does it feed on? What other animals and insects does it rely on for survival? This will teach kids that each part of an ecosystem is related. Start a project! The best way to teach kids anything is to get them involved. Put bird feeders up in your neighborhood. Leave out snacks for rabbits and groundhogs. Put up signs for drivers in your community to watch out for deer crossing the road.
