East Texas Attorney Michael Smith Honored with Sam B. Hall Civic Service Award
MARSHALL, Texas, April 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- East Texas trial lawyer Michael C. Smith from the Marshall office of Siebman, Burg, Phillips & Smith, LLP, recently was honored with the 2016 Sam B. Hall Civic Service Award presented by East Texas Baptist University in recognition of his many years of civic and community service.
The award is named for the late Judge Sam B. Hall Jr., a former Congressman who also served on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas for years. Mr. Smith, who worked as Judge Hall's law clerk in the early 1990s, served as the keynote speaker during a dinner and lecture at the school where he talked about his experiences with the judge. The primary beneficiary of the East Texas Baptist fundraising event is a program that provides scholarships to two graduating seniors at nearby Marshall High School each year.
"It was incredible to work with someone of Judge Hall's caliber and character, and I am very grateful to be recognized by my friends at East Texas Baptist with this honor bearing his name," says Mr. Smith. "Very few of us will ever be able to make the wide-ranging contributions that Judge Hall achieved, but his legacy is an important reminder that we all can do more to help others."
For more than 20 years, Mr. Smith has represented clients in cases involving complex commercial disputes and allegations of patent infringement. He has appeared in more than 800 Eastern District matters during his career and chaired the district's Local Rules Advisory Committee for nine consecutive years. He most recently helped clients SteelSeries ApS and SteelSeries North America Corp. win a complete defense victory in a patent infringement trial heard in the Eastern District.
In his community work, Mr. Smith previously served consecutive terms on the Marshall City Commission and as president of both the Harrison County Historical Museum and the Marshall Citizens Advisory Committee. He currently serves on the Marshall Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
