ECO RED SHIELD Earns QAI Listing for Fire Retardant Treated Wood Classification
QAI Listing B1053-1 Verifies that Eco Red Shield™ Coating Meets Fire Retardant Treated Wood Code Requirements for use as Structural Members
VISTA, Calif., Sept. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Eco Building Products, Inc. (OTCBB: ECOB) announced today that Eco Red Shield™ coatings, manufactured by Eco Building Products, Inc., recently achieved QAI Laboratories (QAI) listing B1053-1, providing evidence that Eco Red Shield's fire protection qualities now meets building code requirements for Class "A" flammability performance on all solid sawn lumber, making Eco Red Shield protected lumber equivalent to the traditionally accepted fire retardant treated wood (FRTW) for interior use. Achieving the QAI listing for Flame spread properties renders Eco Red Shield protection applied to solid sawn lumber the first topical wood treatment of its kind for interior Class "A" flammability, Wood Ingesting Organisms including Formosan Termites and Wood‐Rot Decay to meet building code requirements. Building officials, architects, contractors, specifiers, designers and others utilize QAI listings and product labeling to provide a basis for using or approving Eco Red Shield coated lumber products in construction projects under the International Building Code.
QAI Laboratories (QAI) is a leader in testing, inspection, and certification of building products for manufacturers and retailers, ensuring that Eco Red Shield protection meets or exceeds current building code requirements for the intended application. QAI has qualified the Colton, California facility to produce Eco Red Shield protected lumber to meet FRTW building code requirements. QAI and The Company are contractually committed to ongoing factory auditing programs, and the follow-on qualification of the Company's seven other production sites.
The Company successfully tested Eco Red Shield coatings to meet ASTM E84 Class "A" thirty minute extended testing typically achieved using pressure treatment methodology. Eco Red Shield topical treatment meets the same performance requirements allowing the end user an alternative that does not expose users to potentially toxic or harmful chemicals, twisting or warped lumber and potential corrosive properties. Eco Red Shield protection is the world's first code compliant fire retardant treated wood product to meet GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certificationsm, criteria ensuring end-user compliance with indoor air quality standards developed to be safe for our children. No other product of this type exists in the world, bearing building code acceptance, with the exception of Eco Red Shield protection, creating a true Eco-Friendly Technically Advanced Building Material, revolutionizing the building products industry.
QAI Laboratories certification of Eco Red Shield protection meets the following criteria: ASTM E84 - "Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials"; UL 723 – "Standard Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials" extended for 20 minute duration; NFPA 255 - "Standard Method Test of Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials" extended 20 minutes; UBC 8-1 - "Test Method for Surface-Burning Characteristics of Building Materials" extended 20 minutes duration; ASTM E2768 – "Standard Test Method for Extended Duration Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials (30 min Tunnel Test)". The Company tested representative solid sawn lumber achieving a maximum flame spread index of 15 and a maximum smoke developed index of 15 with the flame front advancing less than 10.5 feet in the testing chamber for when exposed to a duration of 30 minutes. ECOB is committed to additional testing to achieve plywood acceptance and certification under the same criteria. Eco Red Shield protection now meets the following International Building Code requirements 2009 International Building Code 2303.2 for interior applications.
"Our team set out to develop an Eco-Friendly alternative to pressure treated lumber with the added values of Mold and Fire inhibition, safe and capable for use in full structure application. This became a reality with the recent issuance of the ICC-ES report ESR 3255. Our team kept moving forward, leveraging our success to meet building code requirements for fire properties, no longer to be referred to as "value added". We have now proven compliant to the building code requirements; however, we can no longer be compared to one single product or stand-alone manufacturer. In a league of its own, Eco Red Shield protection is superior to anything currently on the market, and with a cost structure everyone can afford," stated Mark Vuozzo, Chief Technical Officer of Eco Building Products. "Highlighting our test results, the smoke production index is extremely low, proving the wood is not burning. Fire destroys structures, but smoke is what typically is harmful to humans", added Vuozzo.
"Against all odds, ECOB has proven to the world that we can change the wood preservation/pressure treatment business, establishing AC433, and without industry giants knowing the Company was funding this platform. Now ECOB is announcing our recent achievement, QAI Listing for fire retardant treated wood applied to solid sawn structural framing members equal to FRTW used on commercial buildings and multi-family party walls and elevator shafts. Working in the construction framing business for over 35 years, my vision was to bring cost effective lumber protection to residential home builders that could never afford to use FRTW in a single family home. My team and I have all been very dedicated to these efforts, even amidst relentless naysayers and industry critics on Yahoo message boards, and other public forums. While it is certainly much easier to be critical than it is to be correct, we have chosen the higher route. As a result of our diligence, we have now raised the bar so high that it could take years for the competition to figure out how to effectively combine Termite, Wood-Rot Decay and structural Fire protection, all in one code compliant, Eco-Friendly treatment.
As a result of our impressive portfolio of certifications and eco-friendly products, ECOB has engaged the U.S. Government to adopt this new Green technology. With the assistance of The Federal Circle, we are replacing old technology treated lumber with ECOB's SKU's in the GSA system for immediate implementation on all Federal, Military and USAID projects. Additionally, the Eco team is committed to contacting every Building Department in the USA and Canada, teaching them that color is not what makes protection on lumber work; rather it's the certifications and implicit quality controls that matter," stated Steve Conboy, President and CEO of Eco Building Products. "Our business plan was to create primary demand for Eco Red Shield using our own framing and truss company, taking Eco Red Shield vertical on every job, and concurrently working on achieving code approvals. Now we have all the big lumber producers looking at this product for their own distribution. Lots of products wait for the supply chain to take their products to market, at ECOB we took it to market first, taking business away from the supply chain in order to create national demand. Currently, we are entertaining all big lumber producers to decide who is the right fit to sell the only cost-effective, Eco-Friendly, GREENGUARDÒ certified protection for lumber" added Conboy.
