PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., June 18, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Diagnostic technologies, which make up a complex and quickly evolving field, are often the pipeline to more tests and treatment choices. But how can healthcare professionals determine which of the thousands of diagnostic technologies in use have clinical utility and provide the greatest value?
ECRI Institute, an independent nonprofit dedicated to researching the best approaches to improving patient care, will explore issues like this and more in its second annual methodology workshop "Evidence Boot Camp II: Diagnostic Technologies and Genetic Tests."
The interactive boot camp, which will be held July 14-15, 2015, at ECRI Institute's suburban Philadelphia headquarters, is designed to help clinicians, methodologists, and health technology assessment professionals from health plans, hospital and health systems, manufacturers, genetic testing labs, and clinical specialty societies better understand the evidence-based processes for evaluating diagnostic technologies, including imaging and genetic tests.
"With tens of thousands of diagnostic technologies on the market, healthcare professionals are often scrambling to get up to speed quickly on how to make informed usage or coverage decisions," says Vivian H. Coates, vice president, information services and health technology assessment, ECRI Institute. "This course will better prepare them to make sound, evidence-based decisions about these costly, in-demand technologies and applications."
The workshop will address evidence frameworks that guide the analysis of diagnostic tests, conducting evidence searches, assessing risk of bias, performing meta-analysis, grading the evidence, and constructing decision trees for diagnostic tests.
"This year's workshop builds on the guidance we provided at last year's event—the key elements of thorough, objective, evidence-based health technology assessment—and applies it to diagnostic technologies. But you don't have to have participated last year to get value from this workshop," says Karen Schoelles, MD, SM, FACP, director, Evidence-based Practice Center, ECRI Institute. "Our expert staff and attendees will engage in hands-on discussions about evidence-based decision making for this specific class of technology."
