Edith Peterson Mitchell, M.D. is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology and is Clinical Professor, Department of Medicine and Medical Oncology, Program Leader, Gastrointestinal Oncology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and Associate Director for Diversity Programs and Director of the Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities for the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson. Dr. Mitchell also is a retired brigadier general in the U.S. Air Force, and was the first female physician to attain this rank.
As a practicing medical oncologist, Mitchell's research interests have included many cancer types such as breast, colorectal, pancreatic and other gastrointestinal malignancies. Her work has focused on developing new therapies as well as working toward better and more effective strategies and regimens using existing techniques. She has more than 100 publications in journals, book chapters and abstracts. She has received numerous grants in support of her work and served on several National Cancer Institute review panels.
Nationally, Dr. Mitchell is President of the National Medical Organization and is very active in community affairs that promote health and cancer prevention.
At the conference, Dr. Mitchell will speak on the topic, "Colorectal Cancer: Genetic Testing for Screening, Susceptibility, Prognosis, and Targeted Therapies – What is a Clinician to Do!" The discovery of mutations in genes that render individuals susceptible to colorectal cancer has placed a new emphasis on screening, and non-invasive tests have been developed to compete with colonoscopy. Furthermore, gene profiling can both identify patients with colorectal cancer that need chemotherapy as well as help determine the type of chemotherapy. Dr. Mitchell will describe how the oncology community is attempting to deal with this constantly evolving challenges.
