FOLSOM, Feb. 22, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation (EMPSF) announced today the speakers for the 2nd Annual Emergency Care Patient Safety Summit to be held in San Antonio, Texas on March 22-23, 2012. The annual conference is devoted to advancing patient safety knowledge associated with providing emergency care in the pre-hospital and emergency department settings.
"We are thrilled to bring back so many of the leaders of the emergency medicine and patient safety community to our annual summit," said Dianne Vass, executive director of EMPSF. "Creating a forum where stakeholders from across the breadth of the emergency care and patient safety communities can come together to share latest research, bring fresh perspectives and simply connect with one other is vital to improving the safety of the front lines of our health care system."
The theme of this year's conference is "From Insights to Outcomes – Getting Results!" and builds upon the success of EMPSF's inaugural summit in 2011 where over 100 emergency physicians, nurses, administrators, patient safety officers, EMT professionals and others allied to this field attended. Some of the presentation topics given by nationally recognized experts include:
- Crowding and Boarding Issues
- Human Factors and Systems Safety Engineering in Emergency Medicine
- Call Back Systems - Extending the Patient Safety Net
- Building High Functioning Teams - Where is My TeamStepps Coach?
- Medication Errors and Role of the Pharmacist in the ED
- Standardization, Patient Safety and Medical Error
- Electronic Medical Records: Taking the Good with the Bad
- Emergency Department Performance Measures: Safety and Satisfaction
- Telemedicine – A Tool for Improving Access to Specialty Care & Impacting Patient Safety
The annual summit is one of many patient safety initiatives sponsored by EMPSF. Each year the foundation, in association with the ACEP Emergency Medicine Foundation, funds a $75,000 patient safety research training grant in the field of emergency care. Past recipients include Wesley Self MD, Vanderbilt University Medical Center; Rosemarie Fernandez MD, Wayne State University School of Medicine; Lisa Calder MD, Ottawa Health Research Institute; Daniel Patterson Ph.D., University of Pittsburgh; and Terry Fairbanks MD, University of Rochester.
In February, EMPSF launched a new patient safety educational webinar series inviting thought leaders from across the emergency care spectrum to address key challenges and opportunities.
