Employers Are Hiring People With Criminal Records
BackTrack, one of the nation's most experienced and respected employment screening firms, conducted a study where 44% of employers admitted to hiring someone with a felony criminal record
CLEVELAND, Jan. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- BackTrack conducted a study asking Human Resource Managers if they have ever hired someone with a felony criminal record. Surprising enough, 44% of Human Resource Managers admitted to hiring someone with this background.
Communities are annually absorbing close to 650,000 formerly incarcerated individuals, according to a report by the Council of State Governments. Having a criminal record can be difficult for job hunting; however, the BackTrack study proves that people are willing to give someone a second chance, whether it be from a new trade they learned while incarcerated, the fact that they have paid their debt to society or that the companies are abiding by the federal law prohibiting employment discrimination. Although BackTrack cannot know for certain, they do know that employers recommend convicted criminals answer truthfully on applications or in a job interview.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice nearly 40% of America's working-age adult population has a criminal record. Refusing to hire anyone with a record is significantly decreasing your applications for hire, and can be criminally wrong itself, unless it is a legitimate business disqualification.
