CHICAGO, Nov. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Five million U.S. students, approximately one in ten, are classified as English Learners (ELs) who speak a language other than English at home. While they are the fastest-growing student population in the country, 70 percent of teachers report that they have had no training to support EL students. The book introduces the English Learner Growth Framework as a means to understand and map the progression of EL students from beginner to advanced across six competencies: growth mindset, agency, family and culture, school connections, language acquisition and coping mechanisms.
The EL Growth Framework can serve as an important tool for teachers to not only assess and develop students, but to also work with EL students and their families to establish clear goals for social and emotional development. About the Authors
Mawi Asgedom is a former English learner from Ethiopia who overcame many challenges to graduate from Harvard. He has spoken to over one million students and educators, including at the international TESOL conference to over 3,000 educators.
