Description
The report will review global markets for endoscope products by their various applications and will forecast trends in innovation and sales in these markets through the year 2016.
Introduction
An endoscope is an instrument that allows one to peek inside of the human body. The Egyptians, Greeks, and ancient Romans were among the first to insert some type of tube instrument into the human body to view what was taking place inside. Archeologists uncovered an instrument considered a prototype of endoscopes in the ancient ruins of Pompeii.
However, it was Philip Bozzini, in Mainz, Germany, who in the year 1805 made the first attempt to observe inside the living human body directly through a tube he created. It was known as a Lichtleiter (light guiding instrument) to examine the urinary tract, rectum, and pharynx.
The demand for endoscope services is increasing due to an increase in the aging and chronically ill population worldwide. Advancements in endoscopic technologies and inclusion of various types of lighting sources, video cameras, real-time conversion of data into three-dimensional images are also driving this market. Endoscopy procedures have become highly effective in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of cancer patients. Many now consider endoscopy to have become the gold standard for cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as for many other medical conditions.
There are other reasons that minimally invasive surgical (MIS) procedures like endoscopy are gaining ground in the overall medical arena. Endoscopic procedures, in general, have a lower cost than their counterparts in traditional surgery. In some cases, the patient only needs light sedation as opposed to full anesthesia. Reduced post surgery monitoring time is required for patients undergoing endoscopic procedures. Finally, there is usually a significantly reduced period the patient has to stay in the hospital along with reduced ancillary costs associated with a post-surgical hospital stay.
There are a large number of companies that make up the endoscopy market. In recent years, there have been an influx of new companies both in Europe and in the rest of the world that have begun to produce various types of endoscopic equipment, imaging equipment, and ancillary supplies for this market.
This BCC Research report provides a comprehensive analysis of the global market for endoscopy services and equipment. This report also includes the forecast of the global endoscopy market for the five year period through 2016.
