The study, entitled: "Efficacy of Glucose or Amino Acid-Based Commercial Beverages in Meeting Oral Rehydration Therapy Goals After Acute Hypertonic and Isotonic Dehydration," was led by the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USAREIM) and published online in the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.
In this study, 26 healthy adults (21 males, 5 females) underwent either a controlled bout of hypertonic or isotonic dehydration. Hypertonic dehydration was achieved from exercise on a treadmill or cycle ergometer, and isotonic dehydration was produced by oral administration of a diuretic to stimulate increased urine and electrolyte losses. The study compared using a sports drink versus enterade® to achieve rehydration and analyzed fluid retention, plasma volume (PV), and interstitial fluid (ISF) volume restoration.
Results indicate that enterade® replaced electrolytes and preserved fluid retention better than the more popular and well-known sports drink option. In the hypertonic trial, enterade® produced significantly greater fluid retention compared to the sports drink (75% versus 57%), ISF volume restoration, and greater PV restoration. In the isotonic dehydration trial, enterade® replaced electrolytes and preserved ISF volume better than the sports drink.
