EPA Recognizes LG Electronics USA for Green Power Leadership
LG Reduces Carbon Footprint with 100% Green Energy at U.S. Headquarters
ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., April 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- LG Electronics USA is purchasing green power for its Englewood Cliffs headquarters building in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Green Power Partnership. LG is purchasing more than 1.5 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power over the next 18 months, which is enough green power to meet 100 percent of the headquarters' electricity use.
"LG is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50 percent* by the end of 2020," said Wayne Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics USA. "Purchasing green power is one example of how LG is working to meet this aggressive goal and demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship."
LG's purchase of utility green power products from BlueStar Energy Solutions demonstrates a proactive choice by LG to switch from traditional sources of electricity generation and support cleaner renewable energy alternatives. According to the EPA, LG's green power purchase of more than 1.5 million kWh is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of more than 200 passenger vehicles per year, or the CO2 emissions from the electricity use of more than 100 average American homes annually.
"EPA applauds LG for joining the Green Power Partnership and for meeting 100 percent of its electricity use for its U.S. headquarters building with renewable resources," said Blaine Collison, director of the EPA Green Power Partnership. "Complementing LG's strong GHG reduction goal, the company's green power commitment helps to reduce the environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity use and provides an excellent example for other organizations."
Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass, and low-impact hydro. Purchases of green power help accelerate the development of new renewable energy capacity nationwide and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector.
In addition to leading the way in green power purchases, LG Electronics was named 2012 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year by EPA for its outstanding contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by manufacturing energy-efficient products and helping to educate millions of consumers about those products.
