The European final abutment market can be segmented by fabrication process, yielding three segments: stock abutments, custom cast abutments and CAD/CAM abutments. In 2016, the largest segment in the total final abutment market was the stock abutment segment. Historically, stock abutments dominated the final abutment market in Europe but there has been a shift towards customized and technology-driven solutions in recent years, which is expected to limit the growth of this segment over the forecast period. Generic products from low-cost competitors have largely contributed to price deprecation in the market and diminishing revenue growth across Europe.
Another recent development within the stock abutment segment also contributing to price depreciation is the introduction of Ti-Base abutments. Ti-Bases, also known as titanium bases or titanium interfaces, are pre-fabricated abutments that are intended for in-house milling machines and provide dentists with the option of creating a screw-retained or cement-retained restoration.
A dental abutment is a metal or ceramic piece that connects to a dental implant via an abutment screw. The abutment further functions as a connector between the implant and final outer crown placed on top of the implant. Often times, a provisional abutment is administered, but ultimately it must be replaced by a final abutment to ensure a permanent solution. Abutments are offered in a variety of material types ranging from titanium, steel, ceramic, zirconia and even gold. The abutment market is segmented in terms of its fabrication method. Abutments are predominantly prefabricated and offered as a 'stock' abutment. Stock abutments represent the traditional abutment product and are popular because they are relatively inexpensive and efficient. Although the use of prefabricated abutments can be highly successful, less than ideal implant placement and soft tissue architecture problems can limit their application. In situations where stock abutments cannot establish proper margin definition and or develop the emergence profile, custom abutments are required.
