PITTSBURGH, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Amachi Pittsburgh, an organization dedicated to helping Allegheny County's children fulfill their potential through mentoring relationships, is in the midst of an ambitious initiative, 100 Mentors in 100 Days. The initiative is designed to ensure that Amachi delivers on the organization's mission of enabling young people to realize their God-given purpose, even though one or both parents may be incarcerated and their home life may be in crisis.

"We are a third of the way to our goal of recruiting 100 new mentors to help 100 children through the emotional rigor of parental incarceration, and we believe that there are like-minded citizens who want to help," said Anna E. Hollis, executive director of Amachi Pittsburgh. "Volunteering means giving of yourself, and we believe that sort of generosity exists in abundance in Pittsburgh."
Mentoring is one of the purest -- and simplest -- forms of volunteering. Every moment of time and energy spent with a mentee generates an immediate outcome. And that positive influence is highly rewarding for mentors as well. In the United States, about three million adults have formal, one-to-one mentoring relationships with young people, and 96 percent of existing mentors would recommend mentoring to others.
